Pictures of some of the Stevia plantations in the State of Parana, in southwestern Brazil. The leaves of these plants are used by Steviafarma ( the maker of Stevita brand stevia) to naturally produce the stevia extract which is at least 95% pure. Only the leaves are utilized in the extraction process.
A view of one of the stevia plantations... A close up of a single stevia plant.
Most of the leaves processed by Steviafarma/Stevita belong to the original native stevia from the areas between Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina and are known as the "Criola" (criole) variety. These leaves produce on the average 25 to 35% Rebaudiosides, 55 to 65% Stevioside and small % of Dulcoside, the sweet substances produced in the leaves of the stevia plant.
By natural selection, over the years, Steviafarma has developed new varieties of the plant which produce from 75 to 90% Rebaudiosides. This variety, however, can not be reproduced by seeds, and it has to be reproduced by cuttings in order to maintain its Rebaudiosides content.
