Stevita Stevia Co. – A Brief Background
The Stevita stevia brand has its origins in the mid 80’s, when a group of stevia farmers and investors in southwestern Brazil formed a company, Steviafarma S/A, to farm and to produce the sweet extract of the stevia plant leaves. This area is a natural habitat of the stevia herb.
Stevita was introduced as a table top non-caloric sweetener in the Brazilian market in 1988.
In 1989, Oscar Rodes, the founder of Stevita Co. filed a GRAS petition with the FDA to have Stevita stevia allowed in the USA market as a sweetener. At that time FDA required several scientific safety studies in addition to the studies available, and because of estimated costs of the studies ( over $10 million), the petition was withdrawn and the product removed from the market. With the passage of the DSHEA act of 1994, Stevita was reintroduced in the USA market as a dietary supplement in 1995.
Steviafarma , for the last 20 years has dedicated all its resources and business focus in the farming, extraction and marketing of stevia products. Over all these years it has spent millions of dollars in research to develop varieties of stevia plants that produce a more sugar-like tasting extract. It also has spent lots of resources to develop an extraction process that uses water filtration and natural resins to obtain a final extract with a very pure and clean taste,
Stevita stevia is cultivated in one of the best and richest soil in the world ( the southern Brazilian red clay soil) by Steviafarma which is a company conscientious of the preservation of the environment and continuously searching for social harmony through spiritual, ecological and sustainable industrial and farming practices. As a result of this hard work and dedication, the Stevita brand is recognized as the number one in quality among all the stevia products available in the market.
